February 17: Schubert’s last sonata

Piano Masterworks II

Tuesday February 17, 2025 @ 4:00pm & 7:00pm

CHANNING HALL

Unitarian Universalist Church, Princeton

It can be a dangerous path to read too much into the “last” work of any composer – most probably they didn’t know it would be their last when they wrote it. But Schubert’s state of health surely made him aware that his life would not be long.

The B-flat Sonata is one of his most heavenly creations, with a slow movement that is one of the most profoundly beautiful piano pieces you will ever hear. Also on the program, Beethoven’s beloved “Pathetique” Sonata and short, genial Bagatelles by Bela Bartok.

Per Tengstrand, piano
